Changes to the DBI service model

How has DBI changed?

We have introduced a new process and system to improve the management and purchase of DBI from the VMIA for Victorian builders. Please see the Minister's press release here [PDF, 123KB]

BuildVic, an online portal, streamlines the process of purchasing and managing DBI, giving builders online access via multiple devices. A panel of DBI Distributors has been introduced to provide BuildVic access and act as a point of contact for DBI-related matters. The members of the panel are:

DBI Distributor   Contact Number Email
 Arthur J Gallagher & Co (AUS) Limited  1300 300 115
Bovill Risk & Insurance Consultants Pty Ltd  1800 077 933
CCM Insurance Group Pty Ltd  03 9853 4688
HIA Insurance Services Pty Ltd  1800 633 467
 Insurance House Pty Ltd  1300 305 834
Master Builders Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd  1800 150 888

Some builders will already be aligned to a DBI Distributor via their existing broker, while other builders will need to choose a Distributor.

Builders wishing to continue to purchase and manage their DBI via their insurance broker will still have the option to do so. However, they must first ensure they have a BuildVic account set up with a Distributor.

To nominate a Distributor and set up a BuildVic account please complete this Distributor Nomination Form [PDF, 235KB].

Insurance brokers

Brokers that are not a DBI Distributor will still be able to manage DBI on behalf of their clients; however, this process will change.

Currently, brokers obtain VMIA DBI on behalf of their clients via QBE. VMIA’s arrangement with QBE ended on 30 June 2017. From this time, brokers will no longer have access to VMIA DBI from QBE.

Brokers can work with their client and support them in choosing a DBI Distributor, as well as gaining consent from them on purchasing and managing their DBI in the future.

When did this happen?

The BuildVic portal launched on 1 July 2017.

Builders were sent a letter advising them of the change and the steps they are required to take. If you have not received this letter please contact VMIA via email

The process for making a DBI claim has not changed, nor has the criteria for eligible claims. Homeowners wishing to make a claim should follow the procedure outlined in the claims area.
